Autumn on Thassos island in Greece.

Autumn in Kazaviti presents an overwhelming richness of fruit and intense colours, washed clean of the summer dust by the occasional refreshing rain. Renowned are the old vine pergolas over the stone-paved village tracks: now offering plenty of sweet and unpolluted, blue grapes. Besides there are heavy branches bending over the garden walls by the track - full of honey-sweet, fresh figs to pick. In the surrounding forest a carpet of wild cyclamen, autumn crocus and tinted herbs. The aroma of oregano and thyme lies over the hillside. Still the many butterflies and bees are busy visiting the autumn flowers. The chestnut trees above Kazaviti are heavily loaded with ripening fruit that still is protected by its spiny husks. Collecting baskets of walnut, easy to recognize champignons and other mushroom, yellow fragrant plums, pomegranates, or harvesting carefully the oregano (leaving the roots intact !) for the approaching winter season. In the gorges, bright red plane tree leaves float with the currents over the bolder's of moss-green rock. Velvet pods on pistacia bushes, against the bright yellow foliage of other shrubs, tufts of silverish shiny hair attached to the fruit pods of wild clematis, mallows in red and white - an ever changing arrangement of colours everywhere.
To walk in autumn up onto the ridges, in the clear air and with open wide views across the sea to the Pangeon Mountains opposite on the mainland - after the summer heat has disappeared...to follow the gentle ascent that allows full perception of this final, fully enriched stage of the natural cycle now, the saturated growth all around. Every day to another destination, over the abandoned cultivation terraces, passing through open oak and chestnut woodlands in bright colours like flames , right up to the mountain hights - or staying in the shelter of the hidden gorges, fully taking in the gentle natural sounds and tranquility - the only thing that matters in these oases of absolute nature.
At night to dine, in the open air still on the village square, after all the busy season has gone and the tavernas pay attention again to every individual guest - all these privileged experiences and full recreation - all that richness means spending autumn holidays in Kazaviti.
